Whenever you see Jack look into a mirror, you can tell something is going to happen, because a mirror is a split between the body and the soul. You'll be able to see it happen in the bedroom and in the dining room. Also I know that this is obvious, but it's great how the music builds up on the enigma and creates a strong tension between audience and character. When Danny is scooting round on his little tri-cycle and the music becomes more extreme, prepare yourselves because around one of these turnings something is going to happen! During my adolescent years I remembered this movie to be truly freighting. Looking back to only the true great moments of the movie for example the elevator blood scene and of course that famous line "Here's Johnny. Please excuse when I say true great moments, am only reverencing them since they seem to be the two big things medias seem to reference back to with regarding the movie. I didn't hate this movie its just the nostalgia glasses came off and the movie seemed to be a little off when looking at it. Don't get me wrong the movie as a whole is a decent film but not the great one I remembered.
Pros
1. Jack Nicholson can play crazed psychopath very well. In fact am pretty sure this role was made for him
2. Music Fundamental. The avangard feel of it is creepy, suspenseful and really sets the mode for every things that's happing at that
exact moment
3. The Overlook Hotel was a perfect location for this film.
Cons
1. Shelly Duvall's character. Know it's not all her fault. Kubrick pushed her and border line mentally abused her so she would give him that 120 percent he wanted. The bat scene was redone over 100 times to where shelly started to lose some hair. If you are more interested you should watch the documentary.
2. It didn't portray Steven Kings The shinning really all that well. They are almost different entity's. I believe even Steven King himself said he didn't like the movie.
3. Not scary. Suspenseful yeah, creepy a little bit but not really all that freighting.
